At the practice of Robert W. Hessberger, D.D.S., we offer the most advanced and effective restorative dentistry treatments, including tooth-colored dental fillings. Tooth-colored fillings offer a number of benefits to our patients, especially when compared to the silver amalgam fillings that were used in the past. The tooth-colored composite resin restores the health and maintains the appearance of the affected tooth. To learn more about tooth-colored filling benefits, contact our Chicago, IL practice today.

Maintains Aesthetics

The most obvious and commonly noted benefit of tooth-colored dental fillings is their natural appearance. The composite resin material that is used to fill in and replace lost tooth structure can be tinted to match the shade of the surrounding tooth material. This results in a natural appearance because the tooth-colored filling blends in with your smile.

In comparison, metal fillings contrast dramatically with the color of the teeth. As a result, the silver fillings are noticeable, particularly when patients are laughing and talking.

Forms a Strong Bond with the Teeth

The composite resin material that is used in tooth-colored fillings forms a strong bond with the teeth. After the tooth is cleaned and any infected material is removed, the treatment area is roughened, and the composite resin is applied and shaped to the tooth. A curing light is then used to harden the resin material. Once this process is complete, the filling is bonded firmly to the tooth and will remain adhered for a decade or more with proper care.

Strengthens the Weakened Tooth

The composite resin material replaces decayed or lost tooth material, filling in any cracks or holes. This strengthens the weakened tooth, allowing it to withstand the daily pressures of biting, chewing, and clenching.

Preserves Healthy Tooth Material

When metal fillings are placed, a larger amount of healthy tooth material is removed so the filling can be placed. With tooth-colored fillings, healthy tooth structure does not need to be removed. Instead, we will only remove damaged or infected tooth material. This preserves more of the natural tooth, making it a more conservative treatment option.

Minimizes Strain on the Tooth

Metal fillings tend to expand and contract at a different rate than the natural teeth. As a result, the metal can put excess strain and pressure on the tooth, increasing the risk of fractures or breakage. The composite resin used in tooth-colored fillings responds to temperature changes within the mouth at the same rate as the natural teeth, minimizing strain on the tooth.

Improved Confidence

Because tooth-colored fillings blend in discreetly, put less strain on the tooth, form a strong bond with the tooth, and strengthen a weakened tooth, patients can enjoy increased confidence in knowing that their smile looks natural and their dental filling will last for years to come.
