Causes of and Treatments for Crooked Teeth

Crooked teeth can not only be a cause of embarrassment, but of dental problems, as well. Misaligned teeth are more difficult to clean and can increase a patient’s risk of tooth decay. If you live in Chicago, IL, Dr. Robert Hessberger can straighten out your crooked teeth using safe and effective orthodontic treatments.

Dr. Hessberger has received certificates of achievement from nationally and internationally accredited programs. He graduated from Columbia University’s Implant and Surgical Continuum, which is structured within the Ivy League school. Our office also serves nearby Niles, Norridge, and Park Ridge.

Causes and Risk Factors for Crooked Teeth

For many patients, a symmetrical and attractive smile conveys youth, health, and confidence. Misaligned teeth are one of the most common cosmetic complaints that our patients voice concern about. They can result from:

  • Genetics
  • Thumb sucking
  • Jaw injury
  • Teeth crowding
  • Missing teeth

Although crooked teeth are extremely common among teenagers, adults can develop misalignment at any age, as well. Without regular use of a retainer, teeth can shift, especially if there is a nearby missing tooth. The eruption of one or more wisdom teeth in early adulthood can also cause dental misalignment issues. If you suffer from teeth crowding, you are at higher risk for developing crooked teeth.

Can Crooked Teeth Cause Dental Problems?

Beyond being a potential source of embarrassment, tooth misalignment can increase your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. Misaligned teeth often make brushing less effective. If one or more of your teeth subsequently experiences a buildup of plaque and tartar, that tooth is at higher risk of developing a cavity.

Tooth decay results from the interaction of plaque, tartar, bacteria, and food particles. Plaque and tartar provide an environment where bacteria can thrive. As the microorganisms eat, they release acid that demineralizes and erodes enamel. As a result, if your teeth are crooked and you do not seek orthodontic treatments, you may require more frequent dental cleanings to maintain optimal oral health.

No matter how long you have lived with crooked teeth, Dr. Hessberger can deliver drastic cosmetic results to your smile.

What Are My Treatment Options?

To address crooked teeth, our Chicago dental practice offers two effective orthodontic treatments: ClearCorrect and Six Month Smiles. The ClearCorrect aligner trays fit snuggly over your teeth and gently guide teeth into better alignment. Each tray is slightly straighter than the previous aligner. Patients should be willing to adhere to a strict 22-hour compliance rule when undergoing this treatment. The trays are changed out every two to three weeks. When your aligner treatments are complete, you will be fitted with a retainer so your teeth maintain their new symmetry.

Six Month Smiles are a great treatment for patients who do not have very crooked teeth and simply wish to improve the alignment of their frontmost teeth. The cosmetic treatment uses clear brackets, tooth-colored wires, and clear ligature elastics to provide a conservative and discreet alternative to traditional metal braces. Six Month Smiles can deliver drastic cosmetic results in less time than ClearCorrect treatments.
