What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a prosthetic tooth designed to restore and protect the structural integrity of a natural tooth that is severely damaged by injury or decay. A crown can either cap an existing tooth or replace a tooth entirely when supported by a dental implantAt our practice, we almost always use crowns made entirely of natural-looking porcelain.

Same-Day Crowns Maximum Convenience

Our office near Niles, Norridge, and Park Ridge features advanced CEREC® technology that allows us to fabricate custom-designed crowns in under an hour. This state-of-the-art machine makes it possible for you to receive root canal treatment and a crown all in one office visit.

This same-day system uses CAD-CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology to take precise digital impressions of your mouth. We then upload these impressions to the CEREC machine, which quickly creates a durable, natural-looking crown out of high-quality porcelain.

Dental Crown Candidacy

Prior to recommending you for a dental crown, Dr. Hessberger will assess your health and the condition of your teeth. Factors we consider when determining your candidacy include...

Oral Health

Other than the tooth you intend to treat with a crown, you should be in good oral health. If you have a more serious dental condition or periodontal disease, we may first need to treat those issues before moving onto your crown.

Enamel Density

You will need to have a sufficient amount of healthy enamel if you wish to cap a natural tooth with a crown. If your enamel is not strong enough, it may be better to extract the tooth and replace it through dental implant treatment.

Dental Crown Timeline

Here are the steps for treatment when you receive a crown at our Chicago, IL, dental practice...

Dr. Hessberger will perform an oral exam and determine whether your tooth needs a crown. We will discuss your budget and crown options and develop a custom treatment plan.

If necessary, we will first remove any infected tissue from the tooth through root canal therapy. Once the tooth is clean, we will shave off a small layer of surface enamel to make room for the crown.

Our dentist will take digital impressions of your bite and upload those scans to our CEREC machine. The machine will rapidly craft a porcelain crown that will perfectly fit in your bite and match the appearance of your existing teeth.

Once your crown is ready, Dr. Hessberger will check the look and fit and make any necessary adjustments. Then, he will bond the crown to the surface of your tooth.

The Cost of Dental Crowns We Make Dentistry Affordable

What does a crown cost?

At our practice in Chicago, IL, a single crown costs between $900 and $1,100. While this may seem steep, remember that treatment with crowns is often necessary to preserve the function of your bite. Choosing not to receive a crown will only cause more pain and expense down the line. We will work with you to make sure restorative dental care fits in your budget.

Will insurance cover a crown?

Many dental insurance plans will partially or completely cover the cost of dental crowns. Our team is available to review your policy with you and make sure you maximize your benefits. We accept payment from several different providers, relieving our patients' out-of-pocket expenses.

Are there other financing options?

Yes! We work with CareCredit®, a third-party lender that enables you to split the cost of dentistry into manageable monthly payments, reducing the up-front cost of treatment.

Our Prices Are Fair and Competitive Patient Testimonial

"As always, Dr. Hessberger and his staff are pleasant and professional.  Pricing for their services is competitive.  What more could you want?  Thank you for being there for your patients!" George Pike

Maintaining Your Dental Crown

With proper care, a crown can last well over a decade. Caring for your dental crown is as simple as taking care of your natural teeth. Check out our tips to ensure a long-lasting dental crown...

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush and floss daily. You can remove bacteria and food particles from hard to reach areas with an oral irrigator (a water flosser).

Avoid Excess Pressure

Refrain from biting your nails, opening packages with your teeth, and chewing excessively hard or sticky foods.

Attend Regular Check-Ups

Visit our Chicago, IL, office twice a year for a deep cleaning and exam to ensure your crown is intact and healthy.

I have already lost my tooth. How do implant-supported crowns work?

Dental Implants  The Next Best Thing to Natural Teeth

If you have missing teeth or need to have your damaged tooth extracted, dental implants are your best option for tooth restoration. Implants are titanium posts that our dentist can surgically place in your jawbone. Over a period of a few months, the implants fuse with the bone, and they are then able to provide secure support to crowns and dentures.

As a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Hessberger is one of the most qualified implant dentists in all of Chicago. If you are curious about dental implants, we encourage you to send us a message today.
