Establishing Good Oral Hygiene Habits
Stressing the importance of preventive care and good oral hygiene habits early in childhood will help pave the way for a lifetime of good oral health. Unhealthy baby teeth can have a negative impact on permanent teeth and overall oral health later in life. Additionally, a strong foundation of good oral hygiene practices reduces the chances of extensive and costly treatments down the road.
Our Pediatric Dentistry Services
When your child comes into the office for a cleaning, one of our friendly hygienists will gently remove plaque and tartar, and thoroughly clean your child’s teeth without irritating the gums. Throughout your child’s time in the exam chair, our staff will talk to your child and explain what is happening, doing our best to make dental care enjoyable.
We take pride in caring for our young patients and provide a fun and friendly environment to make their time with us as enjoyable as possible, while encouraging healthy oral health habits.
After the cleaning, Dr. Hessberger will conduct an exam to monitor and ensure that your child’s teeth are developing correctly. He will be on the lookout for signs of decay and damaged teeth, and check for certain dental problems that are more likely to affect children. Such dental conditions include misalignment, over-retained baby teeth, and impacted wisdom teeth. During the exam, our team will discuss healthy at-home oral care routines for kids. We will also help show your child how important it is to take personal responsibility for their dental health.
Dental Treatments for Children
Despite following a healthy oral hygiene routine, teeth can still be susceptible to decay. As additional protection against cavities, Dr. Hessberger can apply a dental sealant to your child’s molars. This thin protective coating adheres to the uneven chewing surfaces of molars where food and decay-causing bacteria often hide. The molars can be a particularly difficult area for children to properly brush, making this extra defense against cavities a worthwhile treatment.
If Dr. Hessberger detects cavity development, he can provide a gentle dental fillings procedure to prevent further damage. During this treatment he will numb the area around the affected tooth and remove the decay. He will then apply a tooth-colored resin to the affected area to help strengthen the tooth.
