Dentures are natural-looking prosthetic teeth designed to restore the ability to chew and enunciate, while helping you reclaim a normal, healthy appearance. A full denture can replace your entire dental arch, while a partial denture can replace one or more consecutive missing teeth.
A traditional denture has a gum-colored plastic base, and will fit snugly over your alveolar ridge, or dental arch. In many cases, we can provide dentures immediately following extraction of decayed or damaged teeth. When you have fully healed, you will return for your permanent restoration.
An implant-supported denture is anchored to small implant posts placed in your jawbone, so it will not slip out of place while you speak, or while you eat any foods your choose. Whenever possible, we recommend implant-supported dentures to our patients because they can provide virtually the same level of function as natural teeth.
All of our dentures are carefully fabricated at an outstanding dental lab. Our ceramists use advanced materials, and they will choose the color of porcelain that most closely resembles any remaining teeth. Using photos and impressions of your smile, they will also design restorations that will look natural within the overall structure of your face.
The Benefits of Traditional and Implant-supported Dentures
No matter which type of dentures you choose, our restorations offer a number of functional and cosmetic benefits. Most noticeably, by replacing your missing teeth, your dentures can restore your appearance and self-confidence. They can also provide volume to your lips and cheeks, preventing the sunken look that can result from tooth loss. Traditional dentures can restore some ability to chew and enunciate, but not as effectively as implant-supported dentures. With implant-supported dentures, you can enjoy foods like steak and apples, and speak freely without worrying that your dentures will shift. Meanwhile, your implants can prevent jawbone atrophy.
Which Type of Denture Is Right for You?
If you are missing all or most of your teeth, you are probably a good candidate for dentures. However, the best fit for you will depend on your overall physical and dental health. If you have suffered significant jawbone atrophy, you may not qualify for dental implants without first undergoing a bone grafting procedure. We can refer you to an oral surgeon to perform this treatment, which restores lost tissue so you can support implants. Additionally, implants may not be the optimal solution if you have a health condition that could impair healing. Using x-rays, a CT scan, and a review of your health history, we will determine the right option for you.
