Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. They often fail to erupt properly, impacting nearby teeth and other tissues in a way that can result in infection and other serious oral health issues.

Dr. Robert Hessberger performs wisdom teeth removal at his Chicago, IL, clinic. He takes measures to perform this oral surgery procedure with minimal discomfort.

Dr. Hessberger can perform wisdom tooth removal in order to resolve or prevent serious oral health issues.

Benefits of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Undergoing wisdom tooth removal by Dr. Hessberger can provide you with:

  • Pain Relief: Patients who experience pain associated with a wisdom tooth can expect to achieve relief.
  • Comfortable Treatment: Before your wisdom tooth extraction, Dr. Hessberger will administer local anesthesia. He can also provide sedation upon request. Following the procedure, Dr. Hessberger will provide recovery guidelines that may include prescription pain medications.
  • Preparation for Restorative Treatment: If your wisdom teeth have caused misalignment or damage to surrounding teeth, extraction is an important first step that must occur before your dentist can begin restorative treatments.
  • Better oral hygiene: It can be difficult to properly brush and floss wisdom teeth since they are far back in the jaw. Your smile can function properly without these teeth, and by having them removed, you can reduce the risk of tooth decay and other oral health issues.

What Happens during the Procedure?

Once you are comfortable, an incision will be made in the gums and any bone tissue blocking access the wisdom tooth. Then, the wisdom tooth will be gently extracted, either in one piece or after being separated into smaller pieces. Your incisions will be sutured closed, and gauze will be placed over the surgical site to help blood clots develop.

Everyone heals at a different rate. Some wisdom tooth removal patients can return to work the next day, while some may require a longer recovery period. Dr. Hessberger will provide detailed instructions and recommendations depending on the specifics of your case.
